Tips and tricks

With Bernafon hearing aids, you’ll be able to see the positive changes they bring about.

How to get started with your hearing aids

Congratulations on your decision to buy Bernafon hearing aids. The first three to nine weeks are the most important to get used to them. Follow the roadmap for a maximized experience.

1) Start where it’s quiet

For the first few days, wear your hearing aids at home or in other quiet environments. Don’t be shy about reading out loud – this will help you get used to the sound of your own voice.

2) Take breaks

Your hearing aids will let you hear sounds you haven’t heard for some time – this is amazing but can also be tiring. Wear your hearing aids for a few hours the first day and add one more hour every day after that.

3) Speak to people

With your new hearing aids, speech is clearer and you can more easily participate in conversations. But it takes practice. So call your friends, invite them over, or reserve a table at your favorite restaurant.

4) Don’t miss your follow-up visits

Your new hearing aids need fine-tuning – and that’s especially true in the beginning. Talk with your hearing care professional about the situations that are most challenging for you.

5) Don’t be afraid to ask questions

Your new hearing aids offer so much power and possibilities, it can sometimes be overwhelming. Talk to your hearing care professional to make sure you understand how to make the best use of them.

Making the most of your Bernafon hearing aids

  • At home, always use your hearing aids. Keep eye contact during conversations. Avoid background noise when possible.
  • At work, focus on the person nearest you. Keep eye contact during conversations. Repeat what you have heard and ask for any missing information.
  • When dining out, request a table in a quiet area away from the kitchen. When attending the theater, lectures, concerts or movies, inquire if a loop, infrared or FM system is available.

Keep clean

It's important to keep your hearing aids clean. Wipe them regularly with a dry cloth or tissue. It is also important to remove ear wax as this may cause temporary malfunction or in the worst case complete breakdown of your equipment.

Keep dry

Avoid getting your hearing aids wet (e.g. wearing them in the shower or when swimming). If your hearing aids are exposed to moisture or very humid conditions, remove the batteries and place the hearing aids in a dry storage kit. Never use a hair dryer or microwave oven to attempt to dry them.

Avoid chemicals

Aftershave lotion, hairspray, oils and perfume contain chemicals which can have detrimental effects on your hearing aids. Always remove your hearing aids before applying such products and allow time for the product to dry before putting your hearing aids back on.

Avoid extreme temperatures

Your hearing aids should never be exposed to extreme heat. Do not leave them in the glove compartment of your car.

How to clean your hearing aids

  • Wear gloves when cleaning hearing aids
  • Remove the batteries from non-rechargeable hearing aids
  • If you have behind-the-ear hearing aids, clean the hearing aid surface with wet wipes that don’t contain alcohol. This is because they are coated with a hydrophobic coating that is sensitive to alcohol. See IFU for cleaning earmolds and domes
  • For in-the-ear hearing aids, any type of wet wipes can be used for cleaning the hearing aids’ surface
  • An alternative to wet wipes is cleaning with a lint-free cotton cloth and a mild soap solution. Avoid using excess water that can enter the hearing aids
  • After cleaning, discard the gloves and wash your hands carefully with soap and water or disinfect with a suitable alcohol disinfectant
  • Leave your cleaned hearing aids to dry for one hour
